| Description: | Provides technical assistance in collecting blood and other specimens. Performs computer functions including collection list, lables, inquiry, receipt of collected specimens. Interacts with patients, visitors, hospital employees, both within and outside the department, in a friendly cooperative manner. Follows all safety rules. |
| Duties: | •Collects specimens using appropriate equipment and supplies. Collects specimens from patients of various ages. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform phlebotomy procedures appropriate to the age of the patient.
•Prepares a collection schedule, as needed, for glucose tolerance and lactose tolerance tests, trough and peak antibiotic draw times, cortisol stimulation tests, TRH stimulation tests, and other scheduled procedures.
•Identifies patient according to policy and labels specimens correctly. Maintains confidentiality of patients.
•Performs the following computer functions: (1) Generates patient collection lists and labels (2) Insures the correct tests are collected by using inquiry mode (3) Verifies collection of all specimens and labels STATS with stickers (4) Performs label printer maintenance (5) Checks collection batches and overdue lists frequently and takes the initiative to assure that all orders (overdue or not) are collected promptly (6) Receives all collected specimens in the Meditech system.
•Enters comments in specimen edits any time there is an issue with a collection or a delay.
•Performs bleeding times, therapeutic phlebotomies, and sweat testing as needed.

| Qualifications: | High school graduate or equivalent. Passing of the phlebotomy Technician's registry (ASCP) or registry eligible. ***Registry eligible employees must pass the registry exam within 6 months of employment. Experience within a medical laboratory is perferred. |
